For the Team

Japanese whisky grew out of Scotch-style production, brought to Japan in the early 1900s, but it's developed its own identity — softer water, different climates, and a culture of meticulous blending have shaped a style known for balance, precision, and subtlety rather than big, bold flavors. It's less about one dominant note and more about how the parts work together.

What to listen for
Delicate Floral Honey Light Oak Subtle Smoke

Great for: highball drinkers · guests who find Scotch "too much" · curious sippers

Good to Know
"Blended" Means Something Different Here

In Japan, blending is treated almost like an art form — master blenders combine many different whiskies (sometimes from a single distillery's various stills and casks) to hit a precise, consistent flavor profile.

Coffey Still

An older style of continuous still (named after its inventor, not the drink). It produces "grain whisky" — lighter and more delicate than pot-still whisky, but with its own distinct character.

The Highball Culture

In Japan, whisky + soda over ice is practically its own category — light, refreshing, and built to bring out a whisky's subtler notes rather than mask them.

Rice Whisky

Most whisky is made from malted barley or grain, but some Japanese producers make whisky from rice — giving it a softer, slightly sweeter, more delicate character.
